**King Leaves Flames**

The Guildford Flames have announced that Grant King has decided to leave the club to focus on his career outside hockey. King has been one half of the Flames netminding pair since 1999-2000, and was a member of the club for their second championship season in 2001-2002 when they grabbed the BNL title, Findus British National League Play-off title and the ntl: Christmas Cup.
Replacing Grant King will be 24-year-old Dave Hurst from the English National Premiere League’s Haringey Racers. The 6’0”, 165 lb netminder is no stranger to the FBNL after spending 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 with Flames rivals Slough Jets.
Flames Head Coach had this to say of the roster moves:
“Grant informed me that he has decided to leave the club to focus on other things, particularly his career in Sports Management. We are obviously disappointed at losing a character guy like Grant, but we do not want to stand in the way of his personal aspirations. He has been a valuable asset to this club since his arrival four seasons ago, and he will by missed by everyone in the Flames organisation. He is a hard worker and a consummate professional who gives everything he has each and every time out. We could not have asked any more from Grant and we wish him all the best in all his future endeavours. I have been working to find a suitable replacement and I am pleased with the signing of Dave Hurst. He has some experience at this level and spent part of his last season with the Jets as the starting netminder during their financial hardship. By all accounts he is a great team guy and I am sure he will fit in well with the team we have put together.”
Dave Hurst will be in the Flames line-up beginning, Saturday, January 25th when the Flames host the Hull Thunder at the Guildford Spectrum, face-off 6pm.

Stars Win Meningitis Charity Shield
(courtesy of the Guildford Flames website http://www.guildfordflames.com )
Saturday night at the Spectrum saw the Guildford Flames and the Dundee Stars battle out the second Leg of the 'Meningitis Trust Charity Shield' in which the Flames held a 4-2 first Leg lead.
Trailing by 2-goals, the Stars looked to get the game all square early in the first period and that is exactly what they did as recent defensive signing, Scott Young found himself all alone in front of the Flames net with enough time to calmly slot the puck past Flames goalie Grant King at 6:47.
The Scottish side soon doubled that lead to give an aggregate score of 4-4 as Teeder Wynne popped up on the back post to beat King down low at 13:54. That was the end of the first period scoring despite the Stars out-shooting the Flames 11-6, making the game all the more exciting with just 2-periods left to play.
As the second period got under-way, it did not take long for the Stars to find the back of the net as Wynne once again fired the puck past King at 31:11. Just over 7-minutes later (38:48) and the Flames were finally on the score sheet as Jason Lafreniere picked up a loose puck to the side of the net and fired it home to make the score 1-3 on the night and 5-5 on aggregate. The tied aggregate score did not last long though as Young was once again on hand to fire the Stars into a 6-5 aggregate score at 41:01. Another period down and the Spectrum based Flames found themselves trailing their visitors 1-4 (5-6 agg.) even though they dominated the shooting charts 18-6 in the second period.
With 20-minutes to play, and trailing the Stars by one, the Flames knew they had to pull out all the stops if they were to bring the scores level and this is precisely what they did when Derek DeCosty finally found a way past an in form Stephen Murphy at 54:33. Now with a 2-4 scoreline on the night and a 6-6 score over the two-legs there was everything to play for in the final 5-minutes, but neither side could find the twine which meant that this game was to be decided on penalties.
As the penalties got underway, things looked very good for the Flames as King thwarted the effort of Young only to see Lafreniere kept out at the other end by Murphy. Flames forwards Corey Lyons and Marc West saw their efforts hit the back of the net whilst David Clarke and Tony Redmond had theirs stopped so all the Stars needed to do was hit three of their last four. Stars Player Coach Tony Hand led the way for his Team and was duly followed by Wynne and Ken Priestley leaving the Scottish side to take the Shield 7-6 thanks to a 3-2 win in penalties.
Flames Managing Director, Malcolm Norman, had this to say at the end of the game:-
'It was disappointing to see the Charity Shield head north of the border after taking the first leg lead. However, Dundee came out more determined, and got off to a flying start, quickly eliminating our advantage. The penalty shoot-out was exciting for the fans, and the evening was successful in raising further awareness, and funds, for the Meningitis Trust. I must thank all the fans, and the players and management from Dundee, for their support for this new competition.'

Bee's win Baker Tilly Shield
(courtesy of the flames website http://www.guildfordflames.com )
Tuesday night saw the Bracknell Bees at Spectrum for the return leg of the annual Baker Tilly shield with the score from the first leg tied 2-2. Scoring in the match started early as the visiting Bees got on the board less than 4 minutes into the match on a goal by Jonathon Delisle, with assists to Joe Ciccarello and former Flame Mark McCoy. At 9:05 of the first, the Bees jumped out to a 2-0 lead when the same trio combined for a goal with Joe Ciccarello finding twine behind Flames netminder Grant King, with assists to McCoy and Delisle. With less than a minute remaining in the first period, the visiting club grabbed a commanding 3-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Tero Arkiomaa. Outhooting the Flames 18-11 and going to the interval with a 3-0 margin, the Bees looked to be on track for the Baker Tilly shield for the second year running.
With 40 minutes to play the Flames would need to be the next on the board if they had any chance to claw their way back into the match with their Superleague rivals. That was not the case, however, as the Bees started the second much as they did the first when, at 22:39, Scott Kirton scored a goal with an assist to Dan Ceman. The lead seemed too great and it was all, but certain where the Baker Tilly shield would rest for this season. The home club did, however, show a spark of life less than 30 seconds later when Jason Lafreniere scored and unassisted goal to bring the Flames back to within 3, but that flicker of hope was snuffed out shortly after at 24:33 when Joe Ciccarello scored his second of the evening to regain the 4 goal cushion with a 5-1 scoreline. The Flames had opportunities to keep the score closer, including a clear breakaway by Craig Lyons, but were unable to capitalize on their chances. The Clubs headed to the dressing rooms with the Bees up 5-1 in the match and 7-3 on aggregate. The second saw Grant king face 14 shots and 10 on the Bees Tom Watkins.
As in the previous two periods the 3rd opened with early scoring once again as Joe Ciccarello completed his hat trick with his 3rd goad of the night at 41:19 with an assist to Jonathon Delisle. The Flames continued to battle hard in the period generating 14 shots on Joe Watkins, but were unable to find the net. There would be no further scoring and the game finished 6-1 and an 8-3 aggregate loss to the Bees, who have now won the Baker Tilly shield two consecutive years.

Returning to the Flames fold is 22-year-old Grant King who decided to take a step away from the sport to pursue a job in the field of Sport Management back in January of this year.
Grant King commented:
"During last season I had the opportunity to start thinking about my long-term future by taking a step into the Sport Management field, it was a tough decision to make but one that I felt was right for me at the time. But now that I am settled within my chosen profession, it has become apparent that I will be able to return to Hockey on a full time basis whilst still progressing my career off the ice. It was a shame that I had to miss the last 6-weeks of the season, but it feels great now that I am back and able to make up for lost time."
Marple continued:
"It is great that Grant is coming back. He is a fine young man with a great work ethic and he always puts the team first. He is looking forward to the new season, and he will learn a lot from a seasoned veteran like Danny."
